Valentino Reconstructs Sneakers With Recycled, Plant-Based Materials

Valentino has just released new versions of its popular Open and Rockstud Untitled sneakers with an eco-conscious twist, reimagining the shoes in recycled and plant-based materials.

The footwear comes under the brand’s ‘Open for a Change’ project, featuring a special blend of viscose and polyurethane using corn-derived polyols as a new alternative to animal leather. 

According to Robb Report, the sneakers’ boast partially recycled rubber soles, with the laces made from recycled polyester material. Even Valentino’s signature studs have been recreated using recycled nylon for sustainable style.

LiveKindly noted that the Maison’s alternative leather is an improvement on 100% polyurethane (PU) leather, which does not biodegrade and has a significant carbon footprint. Additionally, the polyol-based material tends to be softer and more durable.

The Open (US$690) sneakers for men are available with side bands in green, black, or plain white, all featuring white studs on the heel of the shoe. The Rockstud (US$850), on the other hand, brings more colorful studded options. 

To complete the eco-friendly initiative, all packaging used will be made of recycled cotton and paper, with the brand ensuring it comes from sustainably-managed forests.
